Image Analysis

This is an example of a cover for a secondary school magazine, although it is not a college magazine I thought that researching a wider variety of education-based texts would help me gain a more enhanced knowledge on what I wanted to create for my preliminary task.

L- The masthead 'Secondary Teachers' directly addresses teachers who work in a secondary school, therefore appealing to the target market instantly, making them want to read the magazine. The font used is straight cut, which makes it professional looking and legitimate, whereas the bold blue-green colour used is attention grabbing.
The language used is educational based- with article headlines like 'Tips for exam time' and 'Why music is a must' reflects the scholastic nature of the text. These titles also give the audience a sneak preview of what will be featured in the magazine. The titles of the articles are in the same font as the masthead which creates a house style which the magazine will presumably stick to in order to make it recognisable. Unlike the masthead the colour of the article titles are pink/red/orange which are primary colours. These colours give connotations of happiness or simplicity. Primary colours are bright and bold and like the blue-green of the headline they help draw the readers eye to the magazine, they also stand out behind the white background. There is anchorage used on the text saying 'The X factor give pupils a vote, too' The X factor is a well known T.V show which attracts a main-stream audience, so would also attract the target market to this text. The language used in this magazine cover is all of a very clear, concise font which makes it easy to read. When I create my cover and contents page, I too will use a font similar simple font to this one.

I- The institution for this specific magazine are http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/ and the department for children, schools and families. Their logos and websites are found at the bottom of the text. This could also be seen as synergy as the magazine is saying that their is more information on this topic available on these websites, therefore selling the website through the text.

I- The ideology behind this text is to advice teachers, and provide new methods of teaching students. The image of the magazine is almost saying; if you follow the advice and methods in this magazine then your students will too be happy and intelligent.

A- The target audience for this magazine is secondary school teachers, as these are the people who would purchase the magazine. This means that the age group would be late twenties and higher. This makes it harder for the magazine as they must appeal to a wider variety of ages, my creation of a college magazine cover however will be easier as my target market will be 16-18 year olds. There isn't a specific gender-dominant colour scheme. For example- blue is stereotypically a boys colour wheras pink is stereotypically girls. Both pink and blue are used in the cover, however I don't think that they particularly appeal to a specific gender- they are used merely because they are bright, bold, primary colours.

R- The image on the cover is a female student stood behind a podium smiling. The fact she is stood behind a podium reflects the main article title- 'give pupils a vote too, hold a mock election' and the fact the girl is smiling gives the idea that she is happy because of the 'mock election' being talked about in this magazine. The girl is wearing a typical school uniform which obviously both appeals to the target market of teachers and tells us that the girl is a student. The girl looks quite neat and tidy which almosts suggests a trait of intelligence. The image is almost saying; if you follow the advice and methods in this magazine then your students will too be happy and intelligent.

A white background is used which could be to contrast against the bold colours of the masthead and article titles, or it could represent plain paper-which is mainly used in schools; again appealing to the target market. There is a date on the cover which tells the audience when the magazine is for, it also suggests that the magazine is distributed frequently; encouraging teachers to subscribe. There is no barcode on the cover which suggests that the magazine is free of charge or subscription based.
