After analysing the cover, contents page and double plage spread I feel like I have been able to establish conventions of music magazines and what I will need to use on my publication in order for it to comply to these conventions.
Main Image
In magazines it's most common that the cover only contains one large image which covers the page. I will obviously comply to this and have one large main image of either an artist or a band on my cover. I will take photographs of one person and groups to experiment which DTP will look better on my cover image. I will also have to take care with what pose the artists do and what clothes they wear if I'm to show the target audience this is a rock genre magazine. I will use a medium -close up as it says so in the breif and it is the most commom in the magazine covers I have analysed. This shot makes the audience feel personally close to the artist but not uncomfortably close like an extreme-close-up would produce.
Masthead
My masthead will be placed at the top left hand corner of the page. This is not just a convention of music magazines but a convention of all magazines. This is because of the way we read and the way the magazines are stacked on a shelf. I will need to experiment with the colours I use, but I know that it will be typed in large, straight cut font in order to make it look professional and less tacky. As well as this I would like it to reflect the rock genre. I will consider creating a look like the shattered 'Kerrang' masthead. The masthead will need to create attention and be the first thing that people look at. I will need to experiment with fonts and the names of magazines in order to see which one appeals to my target audience the most.
House Style
In the magazine's I have anaylsed, they seem to use a vibrant, exciting, almost aggressive house styles. They seem to use the colours black, white, red or yellow which all seem to reflect the rock genre perfectly. I will definately experiment with colours and possibly do some audience research in order to see which colour schemes are the most appropriate and appealing.
As for the layout; I like the messy, unorganised layout of Kerrang magazine as it reflects the loud, messiness of the music however I also appreciate the clean, simple layout of Q magazine. I will try and possibly combine the two.
Barcode/ Price
All magazines have a barcode in order to scan them whilst being purchased. This helps the institution know how many have been distributed to the target audience aswell as when and where in the country. Barcodes are generally placed towards the bottom of the page. Magazines are priced differently depending on how frequently the magazines are made. I will need to research how often my magazine will be distributed and an appropiate price depending on my target audience.
Coverlines
Magazines use coverlines in order to show the audience a preview of the information and articles inside the text. I will use exclusive articles and fresh information the audience haven't read before in order to persuade them to purchase my magazine. I will not give away too much information however as then the reader will not need to buy the text; they will just have to read the front cover which will eventually create a loss in profits. I will have to consider where on my cover they are placed. I will have a banner headline showing the main article which conventially relate to the main artist on the cover.
